Leanna has recently released her debut album The Answer on May 15. We had the opportunity to get to know her and her music a bit better! See what she had to say below.

MR: You recently released an album called ‘The Answer’. Tell me a little bit about the inspiration behind it.

Leanna: The inspiration behind The Answer, the album and the title track, was watching my closest female friends come to terms with the feelings of not-quite-right-ness that had always existed in their relationships. I think so many people (myself, at times, included) want to be loved so bad they are willing to put aside their own feelings of doubt or unease, as though sacrificing their sureness would be the thing to make the relationship work. However, there will always come a time in which that feeling boils over- and your doubt becomes answer enough as to whether you should stay or go. If you have to ask, then you already know the answer. TL;DR: trust yourself, girl.

MR: How does it feel to finally have a full album out in the word?

Leanna: So strange! This is by far the longest I’ve worked on anything before putting it out and so now that it’s finally available for everyone to listen to and critique and consume, it’s a little scary but also… so exciting? All I ever want out of creating art is to connect over shared experience. And the only way I can get that connection is through bearing the discomfort at the idea that my work will be not understood or disliked. Luckily, so many people have already shared with me how much they like and relate so my anxiety has been worth it!

MR: What led you to wanting to create music?

Leanna: All I want is to connect and be understood. Music has been the quickest way to that for
me, so my pursuit of music is really just a pursuit to be seen and heard and cared about.

MR: You’re almost mid way through your Victory Lap tour, how’s this experience been for you?

Leanna: So awesome!!! Though I needed my time to write and record the Answer, I love touring so much and really missed my girls and gays while I was on hiatus. The Victory Lap tour has been incredibly fulfilling so far and dare I say… maybe my favorite tour I’ve ever been on? I’m having so much fun!

MR: What do you hope to achieve within the next year?

Leanna: I am really really really hoping to make a deluxe version of the album! Because I’m an independent artist, this album was completely self-funded by the royalties of my previous music (which is INSANE, by the way, I am so lucky). However, that meant that I didn’t get to put every single song I wanted on the album because I only had a certain amount of money to make it. So, if the tour goes well, I am really looking forward to giving the people the rest of the music that I loved that didn’t make the original tracklisting!
