August 14 Burt Block Party lineup at the Burton Cummings Theatre brought together sundayclub, LØLØ, Lights and The Beaches on a stacked Canadian girl headlining powerhouse of a night!
Winnipeg’s own sundayclub kicked things off with a strong local presence. Their set had an energetic feel that immediately started building the crowd and set the tone for the night, that you had people dancing along right off the bat.
LØLØ kept that momentum going with a punchy pop rock set full of personality. She played some gems like “DON’T!”, “debbie downer,” but also mixed in some covers like Mr. Brightside and Michelle Branch’s “Everywhere”. She was a natural fit for the lineup, and she had no problem getting the crowd engaged and ready for The Beaches! Would love to see LØLØ come back in Winnipeg to do a proper headline show one day.
Lights was arguably the night’s most dynamic performance. Moving between alternative, indie and electronic-pop, she brought a much bigger feel for the night. She played mostly from her recent record A6, including “Surface Tension”, “Damage” and “Alive Again “, but squeezed into her set like a cover of “All the Small Things” and a few songs from her previous records! Lights was probably the one I was looking forward to the most as she hasn’t been in the city for quite some time, and from the crowd perspective, she was missed in the city.
The Beaches closed out the night with exactly the kind of high energy performance you’d expect from a band headlining the block party. Their blend of sharp guitar riffs, huge choruses and playful stage presence made for a fitting finale. With songs like “Blame Brett” and material from No Hard Feelings, they delivered the biggest singalong moments of the evening. The band’s Winnipeg performance capped off a night that successfully moved from emerging local talent through pop-punk and alternative sounds to a polished Canadian rock headliner. It was for sure a night to remember!
